About Matt’s Hats

Matthew Davenport, a 9-year-old from Hampstead, NH, has demonstrated an incredible sense of entrepreneurship and compassion for someone his age. Passionate about hockey, Matthew's connection to the sport extends beyond the rink. He has a special bond with his billet brother, Evan, who plays hockey as a sophomore at Worcester State University. The two first met when Evan played juniors for the Middlesex Islanders and became Matthew's billet brother, living with the Davenport family in his final season.

Determined to visit Evan in Dryden, Ontario, Matthew took a creative and proactive approach to raising the funds needed for the trip. He started embroidering custom hats, using his talent and entrepreneurial spirit to create a product people would love. Matthew worked tirelessly, selling his embroidered hats to family, friends, and the community under his business name, “Matt’s Hats”. His dedication paid off when, by the end of the spring 2024, he had raised enough money to cover the cost of the trip for his entire family and visited Dryden in early July.

But the story doesn't end there. Just recently, Evan was diagnosed with metastatic melanoma, a form of cancer that has deeply impacted his life. Despite his own health challenges, Evan has been a source of strength for Matthew, inspiring him and continues to support Matthew in all his endeavors. Now, Matthew is using his hat-selling business to give back. He is selling custom embroidered “Evan” hats with all proceeds going to Evan's cancer fund to help cover medical expenses and treatment costs.

Evan is currently home in Canada and undergoing treatment, has shown incredible resilience. He is continuing his classes online at Worcester State, but the focus now is on his recovery. Matthew’s dedication to both hockey and his billet brother shows his unwavering support during this challenging time.

Matthew’s initiative is not just about hockey or hats—it's about community, family, and the power of kindness. His efforts highlight the heartwarming bond between him and Evan and the incredible strength both have shown in the face of adversity.
